What To Do (And What NOT to Do) If You’re Locked Out of Your Car

Locked Out Of Your Car? We Can Help…

We’ve all had that horrible moment – you’re busily gathering your things from the car, you’re already running late, you hit the manual lock button on the door, you bump it shut with your hips because your hands are full, and as soon as it latches shut you realize: the keys are still hanging from the ignition.

What do you do? Great question, and we’re here to help answer it. Here are a few things you should – and shouldn’t – do when locked out of your car:

• DO NOT panic. As tough as it is to keep your cool in stressful situations like this, the worst thing you can do is panic. Panic will lead to bad decisions that can damage your car and worsen your situation.

• DO find out if you have a spare key around somewhere. Maybe this seems obvious, but as mentioned above, when you’re locked out of your car, it can be hard to think straight. If you have a spare key and it’s nearby, save yourself some grief and use it to get yourself back into your locked car.

• DO NOT smash your window. Unless it’s a life or death situation, this is about the worst thing you can do. Of course, there are other DIY hacks you may have heard about that give you other ways to get into your car (with their own downsides), but this is one of the worst, as besides the expense and time it will take to fix and replace, you could also hurt yourself in the process, making the whole situation worse.

• DO call South Shore Lock & Key. We are your local car key professionals, able to duplicate, replace, and, of course, open the car when you’ve been locked out so that you can get back on with your day. We use non-invasive methods to open your car door that won’t leave any dents, scratches, or dings and that will get you back into your car and on with your day!
