Your home should be your sanctuary, the place you feel most comfortable and safe, and part of the peace of mind you have in your home comes from knowing that your house is secure against the weather and intruders.
Today, we’ll be walking you through three ways you can better secure your home.
1.) Rekey Your Locks
This is something we’ve talked about on this blog previously, and there’s a reason we keep hammering it home: it’s super important to your home’s security.
If you are not the first owner of the house – or even if you are, and your builder just slapped in the same lock on every house in the development, not realizing all the keys were the same – you simply do not know who may have access to your home without even having to break in. The previous owner could’ve given keys to the neighbors, their friends, family, general contractor, electricians, plumbers, the list goes on and on, and if they have a key, they have unfettered access to your home without your knowledge.
One of the best ways you can secure your home is to have South Shore Lock & Key rekey or replace your home’s locks to be sure and secure that you know exactly who has access to your safe space.
2.) Make Sure Your Door Is Properly Adjusted
The adjustment of your door matters for more than just style… If your door is misaligned, it’s possible that drafts of cold or hot air could be getting in, your precious (and increasingly expensive) heat or cool air could be getting out, and your door hardware may not be able to latch and lock properly, leaving you open and vulnerable to intrusion, even with a recently rekeyed lock.
We have technicians who are expertly trained in making sure that your door is well-adjusted and that your locks are engaging properly, the way the manufacturer intended, and we are only a call away from making sure your door is properly aligned in its frame. We also happily include door adjustment into the service call when you upgrade with us to a smart lock, which brings us to the third way you can better secure your home…
3.) Upgrade to a Smart Lock
This is a great way not only to better secure your home via your front door, but also adds a layer of convenience to your life that you may not even realize you needed!
With smart locks, access control is simplified, modernized, and brought right into the palm of your hands; many of these locks have mobile apps of their own, along with integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, Ring, and many others. You can check the status of and/or lock and unlock your front door lock from anywhere in the world as long as your lock has WiFi and your phone has service!
These locks also have keypad and manual key overrides as well as fingerprint sensors on some models, so if you’re having WiFi issues, you can still access your house using your own unique chosen codes and keys, meaning your home will be modern and secure all at once.
Using advanced technology, these locks work to secure your home in a modern and convenient way, and there are plenty of options for different styles and finishes as well so that you don’t have to sacrifice style for security.

There are plenty more ways you can better secure your home that we will share in future posts, but these three tips from a locksmith on how to better secure your home are a great place to start, and are all things that South Shore Lock & Key is equipped and trained to help you through!
