DIY Hacks for Opening Your Car Door

DIY Hacks for Opening Your Car Door

It’s almost laughable nowadays to think about having to leave your house to learn something new; can you imagine walking to the nearest bus station, paying for a ticket, riding across the city, and then walking from the bus stop to a friend’s house simply to learn, for example, how to play a certain chord on the guitar? Such was the plight of Beatles-to-be John Lennon and Paul McCartney upon hearing about a new chord played by a musician in their home city of Liverpool.

If you, on the other hand, wanted to learn the same chord, you could open a new tab, do a quick search, and learn in a few seconds what cost them half their day on top of bus fare. Such is the beauty of the internet; it can teach you about any subject you could possibly think of, from musical instruments to the history of the Spanish Navy to DIY hacks for your car.

However, there are also downsides to these DIY hacks; in fact, sometimes the conveniences we find – like, for example, DIY Hacks for Opening Your Car Door – are themselves the downsides. Because while you can indeed find multiple YouTube videos telling you how to use duct tape to force your car window open or how to cut a hole into a tennis ball in such a way that when you press it up against the door lock hard enough, it’ll send a shock wave into the lock hard enough to open it, you must ask the question: do these tricks really work? And if so, at what cost?

The tennis ball trick is a definite no. The only way this trick would work is if the lock is already so compromised that putting anything up against it will shake it loose, as proven by the MythBusters.

The duct tape trick, however, can actually sometimes work. But just because something “works” doesn’t mean it’s the best way to go about doing it – ever tried using a screwdriver as a fork, for example? Sure, it’ll work… But not well!

While you may be able to use enough force to get the window rolled down manually, you may want to consider what you’re overriding in doing so. Forcing the window down manually in this way damages the worm gears which are a standard feature in modern cars, and which were made only to be operated with the buttons on your door.

While these DIY hacks are a dime-a-dozen on the internet, they probably aren’t the best route to take when you’ve locked your keys in the car. You can end up doing a lot more damage to your vehicle, leaving you with a broken window or window mechanisms and a much bigger bill to pay than if you had simply trusted a professional in the first place!
